About the Author

Dr. William G. Brozo was a co-investigator on a Carnegie Grant team that compiled an important report on best practice in adolescent literacy (Principled Practices for Adolescent Literacy: A Framework for Instruction and Policy, Erlbaum).  He is a member of the Adolescent Literacy Committee, and member of the PISA/PIRLS Task Force responsible for analyzing international reading assessments.  His other Pearson Education books include Content Literacy for Today’s Adolescents: Honoring Diversity and Building Competence, 50 Content Area Strategies for Adolescent Literacy, and Supporting Content Area Literacy with Technology: Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners.  He has taught reading and language arts in junior and senior high school in the Carolinas and is currently Professor of Literacy in the Graduate School of Education at George Mason University. 

 

Dr. Peter Afflerbach is a Professor in the Reading Center, Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Maryland at College Park. His most recent book is Understanding and Using Reading Assessment, K-12 (International Reading Association).  His research interests include literacy assessment, the alignment of reading assessment with standards for reading and the strategies that readers use to understand text. His research has been published in numerous theoretical and practical journals.  He is a past editor of the Reading Assessment column in The Reading Teacher, and he serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of The Reading Teacher, Reading Research Quarterly, and Journal of Educational Psychology. He is a co-editor of the Handbook of Reading Research. Currently, he serves on the Reading Committee of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the Reading Framework 2009 Committee of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the Reading Committee of the National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS).

I am usually very lenient when it comes on to reviews so I will start off with the good ☺️. Firstly I would say that everything came beautifully packaged and organized the cards are small and compact perfect for when traveling ! They are easy to read and not complicated! They are kind of flimsy and you are going to have to be careful most likely . Now for the con and the only reason I took a star away is because I put the disc into a DVD player (my notebook laptop doesn't have a hard drive) to see if the audio works and the disc was ejected . I'm not sure if it was just because it wasn't a video but usually disc with audio play in my DVD player so it's most likely the disc which is disappointing ☹️. Otherwise from that it's all good ! Just make sure all your disx actually work before you ship them and I'm pretty sure you will have 5 out of 5 rating all the time ☺️!!

As others have mentioned: this set more or less assumes previous knowledge of hangul. Even with that basis, the presentation can be overwhelming for complete beginners, with multiple words per card filed under a single larger category word. Personally, I'd find learning a little easier with every word on its own card, but this way there is a good deal more content possible on the limited number of cards per set. The cards themselves are durable, well-printed and on a glossy light card-stock. They come with a ring, a cd-format pronunciation guide and a full word-list in pamphlet form.

I love the fact that the flash cards come with lots of information on them, plus a CD and booklet. That's very generous of the product. However, the card is too small and the blue color ink is too light in color and hence too difficult to read at night when using artificial light. It's okay in the daylight, but the flash cards really should have been made using dark black ink instead of the blue they used. Black ink would definitely be much easier to view and read.Also, the flash cards should be much bigger than the size they used to create the 200 hundred cards included in this box set (note: there are only 200 cards, but those cards come with lots of phrases; however, that information is too difficult to read due to the overly small print used in trying to fit great information into a small size; the solution is too use bigger-sized cards and not to get rid of the great information buyers/users need and want on the cards).I hope the sellers reissue this set but using traditional-sized flashcards (the kind students buy to write notes on when preparing for tests) and very dark black ink.

My K-POP obsessed daughter is teaching herself Korean, and she was thrilled with this gift. The quality looked good, comes with a disc, if she uses it she will learn something, I'm sure.

The flash cards are very nice, good quality, easy to use and read. however, the CD that accompanies the kit did not work. I replaced the kit and the second CD did not work either. Both my car CD players and my two house CD players were unable to play them. They fit alright, just no recording read. Since it would be helpful to hear the pronunciation I was extremely disappointed the CD doesn't work.

This flash cards are good. The cards have good content though some words seem to be a little bit off... also I found some of them have repeated words... the book included with these isn't a real book... it is just a booklet with all the words on the flashcards.I haven't tried to play the cd so I would't be able to tell if it is good or not.The cards are very thin so you should have to handle them very carefully or else they could rip apart.Overall if you are learning Korean I can say the fulfill their purpose...I would buy them again given the good price on. :D

As a native English speaker, the challenge is recalling the Korean word when speaking. Novice learners are going to think in English and try to translate into Korean. These cards are only uni-directional: Korean to English, but not English to Korean. The reverse side should have only had English. Instead, the reverse side has English word plus the original Korean word.These cards therefore are only good for listening but not speaking. Speaking is typically the more difficult.

Purchased these to leave on my desk at work so I can learn a new Korean word everyday. The cards are pretty thin but overall I think I will get a lot of use out of this product.
