About the Author

Scott Robertson has almost two decades of experience teaching how to design, draw, and render at the highest college level. He has authored or co-authored 11 books on design and concept art. In addition to books, he has co-produced over 40 educational DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop, of which nine feature his own lectures. For several years, Scott chaired the Entertainment Design department at Art Center College of Design. He frequently lectures around the world for various corporations, colleges, and through his own workshop brand, SRW. In the current landscape of easy-to-use 3D rendering software, it is easy to overlook the foundations of what make a great-looking and realistic image. I have been doing 3D animation and rendering for close to 15 years and I can honestly say that this book is essential for anyone interested in that field. Not because it has tips and tricks for how to press the right buttons, but instead gives you a practical understanding that transcends software. Scott does rendering in photoshop, yet can achieve results that I have seen people struggle over in 3D packages. All because he understands the fundamentals. The video content is fantastic bonus and for anyone interested in what that is like, check out Scott's youtube channel which is also an equally fantastic resource.https://www.youtube.com/user/scottrobertsondesignFor those of you who need to improve your drawing first, there is no real drawing in this book. Instead, check out Scott's How to Draw book, which is equally good.

This book is massive. There is so much content that the table of contents is five pages. Small print. Does this mean this is the only book you will ever need on rendering? I haven't finished the book, but I'm going to take wild guess and say 'yes'. I can't be for sure, but I do know this, I will be spending months, if not years perfecting the lessons in this book. Because of that, this will be my last and go-to guide to rendering.In other words, save the time, money, and shelf space, and just get this book. I have been learning so much that my mind is blown. Here's so of my favorite things about the book so far:1. It has a lot of content for every situation you will find yourself in as an artist. If you draw from photo references, there's a lesson. If you use markers to render, there's a lesson. If you're drawing from life, there's a lesson. This is amazing because it never assumes you will use the same techniques with every medium or every reference. Rendering is different for every situation and I love that they take the time to show examples for each. which is why the book is so long.2. I don't have to read straight through. I can use it as a reference guide and learn techniques as I need them. As artist we build tools and techniques one after the other. We don't learn everything there is in one sitting. This book is good for building.3. Reflective or glossy surfaces. Need need need.What isn't my favorite sometimes is how detailed it gets. There are some things that is hard for me to understand. Right now I'm looking at what looks like a math problem. However, I bought this book for that very reason. I want to know the details, so it will take some time.

I picked up this book after reading the first book in the series:I find this book is an excellent continuation on the first. The first sets up your fundamentals and this book builds on that solid foundation with skills that will serve you if you want to take a fundamentally high quality line drawing to the next level by accurately rendering it.This book is printed on the same high quality thick paper that the first book was printed on. Once you learn how to draw - either using the excellent first book in this series or via prior education - you now need to flesh out (render) that perspective outline drawing with light, shadow, cast shadows, and appropriate reflected color/light effects.This book, better than any other I've run across, is a scholarly work that gives you the knowledge necessary to "light" any form, starting with simple cubes which illustrate the basics, to complex shapes like cars and planes. Destined to be a classic in rendering, especially by those of us who create historical representational scenes from scratch, I suggest you buy it, and buy it now.

This book, and its' companion book, "How to Draw" by the same author, are by far the best books I have found so far on teaching how to draw. The books assume that you already know the basics in how to draw in perspective, so, in my opinion, they are not for the absolute beginners. But, if you already know perspective basics, these books will take you all the way to the finish line. The author, Scott Robertson, is an instructor at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Every chapter in these books are like discovering a treasure-trove of golden nuggets of wisdom on the subject of drawing. You won't be disappointed, I assure you.

This book and its companion on drawing are excellent. Be warned however that in order to get the most out of them you will have to invest TIME as well as WORK. These can at times be arduous books to get through, take advantage of the many links to the companion videos to each chapter. Often what was obscure to me in the book became clear after watching the video. The most rewarding thing for me, especially about this rendering book was how it really opened my eyes to light, value changes and reflections that I saw every day but never really noticed.

Regie Routman has been teaching in public schools for almost three decades. She has taught most of the elementary grades and has been a reading specialist, a learning disabilities tutor, a Reading Recovery teacher, a language arts resource and mentor teacher, and a staff developer. Vulliamy, a British journalist with keen powers of observation and nerves of steel, describes what he saw during his 1992-1993 coverage of the war in Bosnia. Much of his compelling narrative consists of scenes in which drunken thugs and uniformed lynch mobs perpetrate outrages and atrocities against civilians, including the systematic rape of women. The testimony he collected for his chapter on rape in the war zone encompasses, as he puts it, "every conceivable dark cranny of sexual sadism and male violence." Vulliamy denounces the UN and the European Community for failing to come to the aid of Bosnia's stillborn democracy, especially its Muslim population, and for denying them the means to defend themselves. His coverage of the fighting in the former Yugoslavia earned him Grenada Television's Foreign Correspondent of the Year award in 1992. Photos.

The shock is not diminished, and Vulliamy's excellent work of firsthand reportage of the Serb and Croat war against the Muslims provides both context and understanding of the carnage, not least in the words of victims and participants. Most chilling are the words of a Serbian "intellectual" that Sarajevo was theater to divert world attention from what was happening elsewhere. Anyone who has followed the outrages perpetrated by Bosnian Serbs and Croats upon their Muslim neighbors must find it hard to be objective; perhaps to his credit, Vulliamy makes it clear that objectivity is not his goal here. Rather, he attempts to show the horrors inflicted on a people whose only crime is to be caught between the virulent revanchist nationalisms of Serb and Croat. While Vulliamy avoids the trap of equating the Serbs with Nazis and the Muslims with Jews, the parallels are certainly there. Vulliamy's rage is directed primarily against Serbian nationalists, but he also displays contempt for the inactivity of the Western powers. This is a work that tears at the emotions and shocks the sensibilities of decent people. Nevertheless, it is essentially a one-sided scream; while it eloquently serves to highlight the ongoing horror of Bosnia, it does not point the way to an ultimate, lasting solution that can send the demons of ethnic hatred back to the hell whence they came. As he reveals, these systems have deep roots in Chinese thought--in the idea that the universe consists of ten thousand categories of things, for example--and reflect characteristically Chinese modes of social organization.

Ledderose begins with the modular system par excellence: Chinese script, an ancient system of fifty thousand characters produced from a repertoire of only about two hundred components. He shows how Chinese artists used related modular systems to create ritual bronzes, to produce the First Emperor's terracotta army, and to develop the world's first printing systems. He explores the dazzling variety of lacquerware and porcelain that the West found so seductive, and examines how works as diverse as imperial palaces and paintings of hell relied on elegant variation of standardized components. Ledderose explains that Chinese artists, unlike their Western counterparts, did not seek to reproduce individual objects of nature faithfully, but sought instead to mimic nature's ability to produce limitless numbers of objects. He shows as well how modular patterns of thought run through Chinese ideas about personal freedom, China's culture of bureaucracy, Chinese religion, and even the organization of Chinese restaurants.

Kerr (Lost Japan), a 35-year resident of Japan and the first foreigner to win that country's Shincho literary prize, contends that the Japanese miracle has become a Japanese mess. Once admired, and perhaps feared, for its spectacular economic successes, Japan, Kerr claims, has become a land of "ravaged mountains and rivers, endemic pollution, tenement cities, and skyrocketing debts." What happened? He says that ideology and bureaucracy are to blame. Japan is in effect managed by an autonomous and corrupt government bureaucracy, driven by an ethos of economic growth at any cost and a mania for control. Everywhere Japan's natural beauty is being destroyed by useless construction projects, as nature must be controlled and construction companies rewarded. The great ancient cities too representative of old, underdeveloped Japan are being replaced by monuments and hotels that are concrete monstrosities. Japan's banking system has failed, yet no one really knows the extent of the damage, as the bureaucracy keeps accurate information hidden. Meanwhile, the bureaucracy continues to pour money into older industries, while Japan falls dangerously behind in the development of new information technologies. There is popular discontent, but protest is hard to come by, because the bureaucratically controlled educational system emphasizes obedience above all else. Japan is stuck, concludes Kerr, and he sees no easy way out. While perhaps alarmist in his message, Kerr fascinates with detailed desciptions of Japan's dilemma and offers a surprising, if controversial, vision of a land in trouble.

In what may prove to be a highly controversial book, Kerr argues that Japan is in big trouble: a self-destructive country that is systematically destroying its landscape, its environment, its very culture by adherence to ideas and policies that are decades out of date. The author descibes land-preservation schemes that end up destroying the land; a national health program that's near collapse; an education system that values conformity over originality; money-eating government programs that no one can seem to stop. In 1994, Japan produced 91.6 million tons of concrete (30 times as much as the U.S.), much of it used to build structures that serve no purpose. In 1998, Japan's government spent $136 billion on public works, more than what it cost to build the Panama Canal. It's hard to know if Kerr hits the mark here, but he makes a strong case. Expect him to start showing up on talk shows soon, and when he does, the requests for this inflammatory position paper will begin to build. David Pitt

AYSE BIRSEL has been designing award-winning products for over twenty years.
